Hi. A couple of friends and I were considering putting on a production
just for fun, but since we're total amateurs we don't really know where
to start. Where can we get hold of a script?

hi
there..... the script you should be able to find from any big theatre
merchandise company (or I'd try amazon and/or eBay as a first
resort). The killer, however, is going to be the legalities. The rights
to the stage show are owned by the Rocky Horror London company, and
while they have permitted amateur groups to perform the show in the US,
they have never given out amateur rights in the UK(unfortunately - on
the evidence of the Big 30 production, I would be inclined to think
that the official stage show could do with some healthy competition to
perk it up a bit...). I'm not privvy to any inside information, but i
don't see this changing in the near future. |

Yes, the script isn't difficult to get hold of, although most of us
die-hard Rocky fans know it word-for-word already. Dress Circle usually
stock it.Ed, I agree that the official UK tours could maybe do with a
bit of healthy competition, but, as I've said many times, I am still
not convinced that allowing amateur productions is the way to go. There
are numerous repertory companies and independent professional theatres
around the country that could inject a bit of freshness and originality
into the design, staging and general dynamics of the show. I'd rather
the professional companies take a crack at it before any amateur rights
are made available in the UK.

Rob, Yes, i
see your point on that one... I suppose I'm just *desperate* for
someone to give us something better than the likes of the Big 30. IT
would be great to see other creative visions in the show as well, plus
smaller productions would have to be more creative by necessity - part
due to smaller budgets (well hey, Rocky on stage or screen was always,
at heart, a B movie...), and partly due to the lack of 'name' turns to
sell the show on the basis of. Well, we can dream...

Does anyone
know if the performance rights restriction is also valid for the rest
of Europe and especially for a stage show to be performed in a
different language ?

Well, Rocky
Horror Limited owns the worldwide rights to THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, so I
would guess that any legitimate production anywhere in the world (in
whatever language) would need to be cleared by them.

Yep, that's
correct. Rocky Horror Company own the worldwide rights and only allow
non-professional productions in North America. The USA is the one place
that the show is totally eclipsed by the movie. One of my favourite
questions from someone in the USA is "why did they make a show out of
the movie then?"
