London Film and Comic Con

A little review from TWW

So the original date for this event got moved, and then moved again much to the worry of Steph who had tickets for the show and more importantly had booked a photo shoot with Barry Bostwick. Finally on Sunday 21st November we went along to the London Film and Comic Con, held at London's Olympia venue.

I have to admit, apart from a small comic con held in our local town, this was the first of these events I had been to, so didn't quite know what to expect. Short answer, I loved it! A day packed with dealer tables, guests doing signings and photo shoots and thousands of fans dressed up in a dazzling array of costumes.

BatmanAfter a bit of a queue to get in (fifteen minutes maybe), the first thing to greet us was Batman and his Batmobile. Funny enough, this was one thing I remember being at the small local event I attended several years ago. Still very cool though.

GrahamThe very first table we went to look at was that of Graham Humphreys. If you have read our reviews of The Oakley Court Film and Memorabilia Fair, you will know Graham is the incredible artist that created the amazing posters for that event among many other pieces of stunning artwork. You can see more of Graham's work at www.grahamhumphreys.com/.

DollsThe lower hall of the venue was dedicated to a large walled off area for guest talks and all the merchandise stalls, and there were many. Everything from tee-shirts, through 'POP' figures, through to original comic books and several tables of artisan work. Stephanie not only managed to find several dragons for her collection (which turned into my Christmas gift to her this year), but also found some amazing hand made dolls including a Frank N Furter item that caught our eye as we walked past. These were individually made and no two would ever be identical. If you are looking to acquire one of these dolls they are available from Sid's Doll Emporium, call on 07956 029082.

Barry BostwickOf course the main reason Stephanie wanted to go to the show was to see Barry Bostwick and we caught up with him amongst the other guests in the top level of the venue. He was as charming as ever and signed some photos we took of him and Steph back in the 1990's. We managed to arrive a few minutes before his photo shoots were scheduled to start, so we walked down with him to the photo area and Steph joined the queue to get her photo with Barry. We also caught up with him later in the day for another chat. I know it is often said, but he is one of the most charming and gracious people I have ever met, and that twinkle in his eyes! What a guy.

Joey CramerI got to have a bit of a 'fan boy' moment with one of the other guests at the event too. Years ago there was a film called Flight of the Navigator (if you haven't seen it, go watch it now). Anyway, the main character in the movie went by the name of David Freeman. There was no way I was going to miss the chance to meet the actor that played the role, Joey Cramer, so we sought out his table and went over. "Hello, I'm David Freeman", I said much to his amusement. "No really, I am" I insisted and pulled out my driving licence to prove it. We had a good laugh about the shared name and I thanked him for the most enjoyable movie. I got an autograph and then he asked if I would like to do a photo with him. Steph will tell you the smile on my face lasted for the next couple of hours and I can honestly say he was a pleasure to meet and to talk to. Thanks Joey.

There were dozens of guests there on the day and Steph got a couple more autographs and had nice chats with two of her favourite Star Trek actors, George Takei and Marina Sirtis. To see when the next event is being run and their guest list, you can visit the London Film and Comic Con website.

We were at the event from 10am to around 4.30pm, and it made for a long day. Our only criticism was there were no chairs around the venue for a sit down (excuding a few in the eating areas). It would have been nice to rest the legs a bit during the day. Overall though I loved the event. The organisers allowed cameras in, although some guests did have either "No posed Photographs" or "No Photographs" signs above their desks, and I took a few images during the day. Check out may gallery below. A great, enjoyable, day out. I can't wait until the next one, now.......what to wear.
